Here is a piece of software that will appeal to people who are both chess fans and command line lovers. We all know those moments when we’re stuck at work, not much to do, and we really want to relax with a game of chess without leaving our terminal so as not to get grilled by colleague Thierry. Well, I found exactly what you need: CLI-Chess!
CLI-Chess is such an experience that you will think you are Anya Taylor-Joy after 5 minutes. You can play online with your Lichess.org account or offline against the AI called Fairy-Stockfish.
And to install it, you just need to run the following command:
pip install cli-chess
What’s great about CLI-Chess is that you can customize the look of your chessboard and pieces by choosing from the available themes. Additionally, CLI-Chess is compatible with Linux, Windows, and macOS, so you can enjoy this chess experience no matter your computer.
If you are a beginner at chess, don’t worry, CLI-Chess is very accessible and easy to learn.
To start an online game with your Lichess.org account, use the command:
cli-chess lichess PSEUDO MOTDEPASSE
To play offline against the Fairy-Stockfish AI, simply use the command:
cli-chess
In addition to customizing the appearance of your chessboard, you can also configure AI settings, such as difficulty and thinking time. This will allow you to adapt it to your level and improve gradually. CLI-Chess also allows you to replay the game via Lichess TV or even play blind for the most nervous among you.
CLI-Chess is, therefore, an excellent way to practice your game in an environment that reassures you 😉 or in complete discretion.
If this appeals to you, you can discover it here.
