In the final stretch of 2025, Corsair is rolling out new products one after another. After the Frame 4500X case and the Sabre v2 Pro Ultralight Wireless mouse, tech2geek brings you a complete review of the VANGUARD 96 Pro.
This mechanical gaming keyboard stands out with its high-end positioning, refined finish, advanced features, and premium equipment that includes a dial, a screen, unique side keys, and magnetic Hall Effect switches. The entire set is dressed in black, enhanced by full aRGB lighting covering every key.

On top of that, it offers a compact size and a detachable wired USB connection capable of delivering ultra-fast 8000 Hz hyper-polling. But does it live up to its $229 price tag? Does it meet gamers’ expectations?

VANGUARD 96 Pro
A keyboard is one of the most important and essential components for enjoying and making the most out of your PC. It is the main peripheral that allows interaction with your machine, whether for productivity, creativity, or gaming.
In this review, we take a closer look at a new Corsair release, the VANGUARD 96 Pro. Announced at a recommended retail price of $229, it clearly shows its high-end ambitions. Its technical specifications support this direction, with strong promises and a solid build designed to withstand the heavy demands of PC gaming.

The bundle also includes a detachable magnetic wrist rest, a braided USB Type-C to Type-A cable, and a tool for removing both keycaps and switches.
Although it is not a TenKeyLess (TKL) keyboard, it is more compact than a full-size keyboard thanks to its 96% layout.

This footprint allows for more desk space for mouse movements. Corsair makes no compromises on equipment, even including a numeric keypad, a multifunction wheel, and an LCD screen with a 320 x 170 pixel resolution, along with specific side keys.

The classic arrow keys and F1 to F12 keys are, of course, also present.

Design and Build Quality
In hand, the keyboard has a reassuring weight of 1.09 kg. With its dimensions of 388 x 141 x 43 mm, it feels dense and, once placed on the desk, is difficult to move. This is clearly a keyboard designed for competitive gamers.

One of its major assets is the use of MGX Hyperdrive Hall Effect magnetic switches, combined with high responsiveness thanks to a wired connection capable of handling 8000 Hz hyper-polling.
These switches are linear, pre-lubricated, with an actuation force of 30–35 g. The actuation distance can be adjusted between 0.1 and 4.0 mm (with a total travel of 4.0 mm). Corsair claims a durability of 150 million keystrokes.

Customization is therefore extensive, affecting not only lighting (aRGB and keycaps) but also settings and hot-swappable switches. The switches are hot-swappable with 3-pin and 5-pin mechanical alternatives.
Its chassis promises reduced noise thanks to a four-layer sound-dampening design. An 8 MB onboard memory can store up to five different profiles, and on the left side, six programmable G-keys are included, compatible with Elgato Stream Deck.

Support for Elgato Virtual Stream Deck allows custom profiles per game or application and can display a Stream Deck overlay on-screen for quick shortcut access.

The overall design benefits from smooth lines, avoiding harsh edges and sharp corners, while minimizing the presence of an external frame. The approach is “modern” but also highly distinctive, giving it a certain charm to fit different setups.
Features and Functionality
Another key highlight is the inclusion of a small LCD screen capable of displaying animations, images, or real-time statistics. Next to it is a multifunction rotary knob, configured by default as a volume controller. Naturally, customization allows users to assign it to other tasks.

Interestingly, there’s no need to download and install the iCUE app to configure this. Corsair introduces a new approach via a web service: the Corsair Web Hub. Using a Chromium-based browser (like Edge or Chrome), you can simply visit the website to manage settings.

At the back, a wide routing channel allows you to guide the detachable USB cable according to the PC’s position, preventing it from sticking awkwardly out to one side. Two rubber feet provide stability, along with two risers for adjusting tilt.

The keyboard also supports numerous dual actions by combining the FN key with others like F1 to F12. For example:
- FN + WIN locks the Windows key,
- FN + F12 assigns different actions to the dial,
- FN + 1 (and FN + 2, 3…) selects lighting effects.

User Experience
With its 96% format and equipment, the VANGUARD 96 Pro requires some adaptation time. The keys are close together, which can initially feel restrictive. However, in gaming, once you get used to hand and finger positioning, actions become faster due to shorter distances.

The USB connection is extremely efficient: while most keyboards operate at 1000 Hz, the 8000 Hz polling rate speeds up communication by a factor of 8. This results in lower latency and near-instantaneous keystrokes.
The MGX magnetic switches impressed me in three essential ways:
- They feel smooth when pressed, eliminating the need to consciously bottom out keys in FPS games—a big advantage.
- They remain relatively quiet thanks to the keyboard’s design, while still delivering a mechanical feel.
- They allow for advanced customization, not only adjusting actuation distance but also enabling two actions per key depending on press depth.

The chassis, design, and finish are flawless. The font, double-shot PBT keycaps, and slightly rough texture help finger positioning and provide confidence.

The screen offers decent rendering with fast refresh, but its placement makes it less visible unless the keyboard is raised—it’s partly hidden by the numeric keypad. Still, during testing, the keyboard felt solid, resistant to flexing, and produced no creaking noises under pressure.

Comfort and Lighting
The wrist rest has a soft, padded surface, attaches magnetically, and is very easy to install or remove.
RGB lighting looks great, with no “spotlight” effect. Each key’s illumination is evenly diffused, making effects more impactful. However, secondary legends on the keycaps suffer from poor backlighting, making a desk lamp almost necessary.
As mentioned, customization is handled through the Corsair Web Hub. The interface is clear and intuitive, organized into categories that control different aspects of the keyboard:
- Lighting Effects: aRGB settings, pre-made effects, color selection, and custom creations. Each key is customizable, allowing near-infinite possibilities.
- Key Assignment: from macros to media functions to mouse commands. Dual actions per key are possible depending on press depth (e.g., half-press “W” = walk, full-press “W” = run).
- Actuation Settings: adjust actuation distance in mm.
- Rotary Dial: assign different functions beyond volume.
- FlashTap: enables use of this advanced trigger technology.
- Screen: upload custom wallpapers.
- Calibration & Testing: including key diagnostics and game mode customization.
Software & Maintenance
Device settings also allow firmware updates, USB polling rate adjustment, Windows key lock, brightness control, and PlayStation mode activation.
Conclusion
At $229, the Corsair VANGUARD 96 Pro positions itself as a premium gaming keyboard for enthusiasts who demand cutting-edge features and ultra-responsive performance. With MGX Hyperdrive Hall Effect switches, 8000 Hz polling, a 1.9” LCD screen, Stream Deck integration, and a refined compact design, it’s one of the most advanced keyboards Corsair has ever built.
That said, its steep price, tight key spacing, and partially hidden LCD may deter casual gamers. But for competitive players, streamers, and keyboard enthusiasts willing to invest, the VANGUARD 96 Pro is a powerful, customizable, and future-proof keyboard.
Corsair also promises upcoming firmware updates to improve Elgato Stream Deck integration and expand LCD functionality, which should make this keyboard even more compelling in the months ahead.
