If you play on PC with a DualSense controller, you probably know the issue: Windows does not show any battery indicator for PS5 controllers. Everything works fine, you’re in the middle of a game — and suddenly the controller shuts off with no warning. Then you start hunting for the USB cable.

DualSense Battery Monitor is a small open-source utility that solves exactly that problem. It runs quietly in the background on Windows and shows a small on-screen overlay whenever your controller’s battery becomes low.

A Smart Overlay That Appears Only When Needed

DualSense Battery Monitor continuously tracks the battery level of all PS5 controllers connected to your PC. It supports up to four DualSense controllers at the same time and checks their charge level every five seconds.

  • When a controller drops below 25%, an overlay appears showing the controller icon and its battery level.
  • Below 15%, the icon starts blinking to grab your attention.
  • The overlay stays visible while the battery is low and disappears automatically once the charge goes back up.

It’s informative without being intrusive.

Installation and Setup

Installing DualSense Battery Monitor is very simple. Two versions are available:

  • A framework-dependent version that requires .NET 8.0 to be installed on your system.
  • A self-contained version that includes everything and does not require any additional runtime.

Download the version you prefer from the Releases section of the official GitHub repository.

After downloading:

  1. Extract the ZIP archive anywhere on your PC.
  2. Launch DualSenseBatteryMonitor.exe.

The program immediately places itself in the Windows system tray. There is no configuration window — everything runs automatically in the background.

To make it start with Windows, right-click its tray icon and enable “Run on startup.”

To uninstall it, disable that option, close the program, and delete its folder.

Manually Display the Overlay and Avoid Steam Conflicts

You can manually show the battery overlay by holding the PS button on the controller for about 1 to 1.5 seconds.

However, if Steam is running, this can trigger Steam Big Picture Mode or the Steam overlay instead. To prevent that:

  1. Open Steam → Settings → Controller
  2. Disable:
    • “Guide button focuses Steam”
    • “Enable Steam Input for Guide button”

Restart Steam completely for the changes to take effect.

Compatibility and Limitations

  • Works on Windows 10 and Windows 11 only.
  • Tested with DualSense firmware A-0630 (latest as of December 5, 2025).
  • Controllers should be connected via Bluetooth for monitoring. USB technically works but is pointless since the controller charges at the same time.
  • Uses virtually no system resources and does not interfere with games.

Final Verdict

If you are looking for a proper DualSense battery indicator on Windows, this is probably the best solution available right now. Install it once, enable startup, and forget about it. It stays hidden and only appears when your controller battery is actually low — exactly how it should be.

Simple, lightweight, open source, and genuinely useful.
