For the past few days, GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition has been available on mobile devices through Netflix Games. Here’s what you need to know.

Announced around two weeks ago, Rockstar Games and Netflix have both honored their first partnership with the release of GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition on mobile (iOS and Android) via the Netflix Games platform.

Available since Thursday evening, players around the world can once again discover or rediscover the adventures of Claude Speed in Liberty City in GTA III, or the adventures of Tommy Vercetti in GTA Vice City, and Carl “CJ” Johnson in GTA San Andreas.

To find out everything about this ultimate reissue of these cult games, here is a quick overview. To access the three games for free (or at least without additional costs for unlimited access), all you need is a Netflix account. If you have one, go to your smartphone or tablet store (Apple Store/Google Store) and simply search for “GTA Netflix.” The three games will thus be available for free. All you have to do is install them, then launch them. Once done, you will see a small window asking you to log in with your Netflix account. When this is done, it will be possible to play GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas at no additional cost and without time restrictions.

I don’t have Netflix, can I play games?

If you are in the situation where you are not subscribed to Netflix or your subscription has expired, there is a solution. Indeed, all three games are available for purchase individually. You will then have to pay 19.99 euros per title, or approximately 59.97 euros for the three games. Once in your possession, they will belong to you indefinitely, and it will also be possible to play them without time restrictions.

What devices are compatible with GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition?

Currently, this GTA trilogy is compatible with Android 8 or later and iOS 16 or later. So, on the iPhone, you will need the iOS 16.0 update or later version as well as the A12 Bionic chip or later version, which is present from the iPhone XS. On iPad, this also requires having the iPadOS 16.0 update or later as well as the A12 Bionic chip or later available from the 11-inch iPad Pro, iPad Air 4th Gen, and iPad 8th Gen.

How big are mobile games?

How big are mobile games? For Grand Theft Auto III, you will need a single download of 1.73 GB allowing you to play and access the entire game, its missions, and its audio content.

Regarding GTA Vice City, allow around 2.80 GB to download the game. Then, during the first launch, there will be around 4 GB of additional data to download to own the entire game and be able to embark on the adventure.

Finally, for GTA San Andreas, there is once again a first download of around 2.83 GB that awaits you, then a second of 6.4 GB when you launch your game for the first time. Once this is done, it will be possible to embark on the adventure alongside CJ and the Grove Street Family.

What does GTA: The Trilogy look like on mobile?

Overall, the porting is quite successful. The many bugs present when the remaster was released in November 2021 on PC and consoles have disappeared. Of course, the quality isn’t up to par with the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC versions. But for mobile versions, the rendering is rather clean, and you quickly get caught up in the game. The main shortcomings come from the display distance, not very well managed, then from a “blurry” filter which is installed on the screen when high speeds are expected in a car or motorbike.

Compatible controllers?

Of course, it is possible to play GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition via the touch keys that are offered when you launch the game for the first time (with several possible configurations). But you can also connect an Xbox or PS5 controller and install your smartphone on suitable mobile controllers (like Backbone) for a better gaming experience.
