We all have that one messy folder called “To Sort”, “Misc”, or in my case… “C ARCHIVES”. Inside? A chaotic mix of screenshots, PDFs, Word documents, old MP3s, and random videos you don’t even remember downloading.
Instead of manually sorting through that digital jungle, why not let an app do it for you? Enter FolderFresh, a free and open-source tool that automatically organizes your files into subfolders — Docs, Images, Audio, Videos, and more — without deleting anything. And if you change your mind, there’s even an Undo button to revert the changes.
Automatically Sort Files With Zero Effort
Created by Tristan Neale, a high school student from South Africa, FolderFresh is a lightweight tool that automatically sorts files based on their type: Documents, Images, PDF, Videos, Audio, Archives, Code, and Other.
It works with any folder on your PC (not just your Desktop) and includes several useful features:

- Preview before organizing — see what’s going to happen before you click “Go.”

- Undo Last — easily revert the last sorting operation.

- Safe Mode — copies files instead of moving them, so you don’t risk losing anything.

- Auto-tidy (watch folder) — automatically keeps folders organized in real time.
During sorting, FolderFresh displays a progress bar and skips important system files to avoid breaking apps or games.
How to Use FolderFresh
The app’s interface is simple and intuitive — even though it’s only in English, anyone can use it.
- Click “Choose Folder” and select the folder you want to organize.
- Enable any of the following options:
- Include subfolders – also organizes subfolders.
- Ignore hidden/system files – avoids system or hidden files.
- Safe Mode (make copies) – keeps the original files in place.
- Auto-tidy (watch folder) – continuously organizes new files.
- Click “Preview” to see how your files will be arranged.
- If the preview looks good, click “Organise Files”, then confirm with “Yes”.

In just a few seconds, your messy folder turns into a well-organized structure with subfolders like Audio, Docs, Images, PDF, and Videos.
If you enabled Safe Mode, your original files stay untouched — perfect for testing.
⚠️ A Note About .EXE Files
During testing, I noticed a small bug: if a folder contains a .exe file, FolderFresh may display “Nothing to organise,” even if other files are present.
Simply move or delete the .exe file, and sorting will work as expected.
The issue has already been reported on GitHub, so a fix is likely coming soon.
Find Duplicate Files in Seconds
FolderFresh also includes a handy duplicate finder.
Just click “Find Duplicates”, select a folder, and the app will scan for identical files.
It doesn’t delete anything automatically — you review the results and choose what to remove. This prevents unwanted deletions while still helping you reclaim disk space.
Clean Up Your Desktop Instantly
If your Desktop is as cluttered as your Downloads folder, FolderFresh has a fix for that too.
With the “Clean Desktop” feature, you can automatically organize all files on your Windows desktop into subfolders by type.
One click — and suddenly, you can actually see your wallpaper again.
📦 Download FolderFresh
FolderFresh is available for Windows only.
