With recent updates to Windows 11, Microsoft has introduced a new Copilot key on modern Windows keyboards. This is one of the biggest keyboard layout changes in decades and is designed to provide instant access to Microsoft Copilot, the company’s AI assistant.
Pressing this key launches Copilot directly, allowing you to interact with AI features without opening a browser or searching through menus.
However, not all keyboards currently include this new key. Since its implementation depends on hardware manufacturers, many users will continue using keyboards without it. Fortunately, Windows 11 25H2 allows you to remap any key to act as a Copilot key, using a built-in customization tool from Microsoft.
This guide explains how to assign a key to launch Copilot on your Windows 11 PC.
What the Copilot Key Does
The Copilot key is designed to quickly open the Microsoft Copilot interface, which functions as an AI assistant similar to modern chat-based tools.
When pressed, the key launches Copilot so you can:
- ask questions
- generate content
- control certain Windows settings
- access productivity tools powered by AI
If Copilot is not yet available in your region, pressing the key typically opens Windows Search instead.
On many new keyboards, the Copilot key replaces the Menu key (Application key) located next to the right Alt key. However, its exact placement may vary depending on the keyboard manufacturer.
Currently, the key’s main function is to launch Copilot, but future updates may allow it to trigger additional AI features or shortcuts.
Accessing Copilot Without the Dedicated Key
Even without a physical Copilot key, you can still open the assistant using the keyboard shortcut:
Windows + C
If you prefer a single-key shortcut, you can remap a key using Microsoft PowerToys, a free utility that adds advanced customization features to Windows.
Step 1: Install Microsoft PowerToys
First, install PowerToys if it isn’t already on your system.
- Download Microsoft PowerToys from the Microsoft Store or from the official GitHub repository.
- Install and launch the application.
PowerToys must remain running in the background for custom keyboard mappings to work.
Step 2: Enable Keyboard Manager
After opening PowerToys:
1- Go to the General tab.

2- Enable Run at startup if you want the remapping to work automatically when Windows starts.
3- Click Restart PowerToys as administrator.

4- Return to the ‘General’ tab and enable the ‘Always run as administrator’ toggle.

Running PowerToys with administrator privileges ensures it works across all applications.
Next:
- Select Keyboard Manager in the sidebar.

- Enable Keyboard Manager using the toggle.

Step 3: Remap a Key to Launch Copilot
Now you can map any key to trigger the Copilot shortcut.
1- In Keyboard Manager, click Remap a key.

2- Click + Add Key Mapping.

3- In the Key column, choose the key you want to repurpose (for example, the Apps/Menu key).

4- In the Mapped To column, select Shortcut.

5- Click Type Shortcut and press Windows + C.

6- Click OK to confirm.

When a warning appears, select Continue Anyway.

Your chosen key will now launch Microsoft Copilot instantly.
Choosing the Best Key to Remap
Some commonly used keys that people remap to Copilot include:
- the Menu (Application) key
- rarely used function keys (F13–F24 on some keyboards)
- an extra macro key on gaming keyboards
Avoid remapping essential keys like Ctrl, Alt, or Enter, as this may interfere with everyday shortcuts.
Why Microsoft Introduced the Copilot Key
Microsoft is gradually integrating AI deeper into Windows. By adding a dedicated Copilot key, the company aims to make AI features as accessible as the Start menu or Windows key.
This hardware change reflects Microsoft’s broader strategy to position Copilot as a central feature of the Windows ecosystem.
Final Thoughts
Even if your keyboard doesn’t include the new Copilot key yet, Windows 11 25H2 makes it easy to recreate the same functionality using PowerToys.
With just a few steps, you can assign a key that launches Copilot instantly—bringing AI assistance directly to your keyboard.
