Connecting to public Wi-Fi at a hotel, coffee shop, airport or restaurant can be convenient, but it also means you’re using a network you don’t control.

Opera is making its built-in VPN a little more useful in these situations. The browser can now automatically enable its free VPN when you connect to a public Wi-Fi network and disable it again when you switch back to a private connection.

The feature is available in France and is not enabled by default, so you’ll need to activate it manually in Opera’s settings.

Here’s how to enable automatic VPN protection on public Wi-Fi in Opera.

How to Automatically Enable Opera VPN on Public Wi-Fi

Before getting started, make sure you’re running the latest version of the Opera browser.

Then follow these steps.

1. Open Opera Settings

Launch Opera and click the Opera menu button in the upper-left corner of the browser.

Select Settings.

You can also open Opera’s settings directly using the Alt + P keyboard shortcut on Windows.

2. Open the VPN Settings

In the Settings page, find the VPN section.

Look for the option:

Always use VPN on public Wi-Fi networks

Enable this setting.

Once activated, Opera can automatically switch on its built-in VPN when it detects that you’re connected to a public Wi-Fi network.

3. Check That the VPN Is Active

After connecting to a public network, look at the VPN indicator in Opera’s address bar.

When the VPN is active, the indicator changes to show that your browser traffic is being routed through Opera’s VPN.

You don’t have to manually activate the VPN every time you connect to a hotel, airport or café network.

When you disconnect from the public Wi-Fi and connect to a private network, Opera can automatically turn the VPN back off.

Why Automatically Use a VPN on Public Wi-Fi?

Public Wi-Fi networks are convenient, but they can introduce additional security risks because you don’t control the network infrastructure.

For example, you may connect to Wi-Fi at:

  • Airports
  • Hotels
  • Coffee shops
  • Restaurants
  • Train stations
  • Libraries
  • Shopping centers
  • Conferences and events

Automatically enabling the VPN means you don’t have to remember to turn it on every time you connect.

This is particularly useful if you frequently travel or work from different locations.

Does Opera’s Free VPN Protect Your Entire Device?

No. This is an important limitation.

Opera’s built-in VPN protects traffic generated by the Opera browser, rather than automatically routing all internet traffic from your computer through the VPN.

For example, if you connect to public Wi-Fi and use Opera to browse the web, that browser traffic can be protected by Opera’s VPN.

However, other applications continue to use their normal network connection.

That includes applications such as:

  • Email clients
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Discord
  • Steam
  • File-transfer applications
  • Other browsers
  • Background applications

So Opera’s VPN should not be confused with a full-device VPN service.

If you want every application on your computer to use a VPN connection, you’ll need a system-wide VPN application or another VPN setup that operates at the operating-system level.

Is Opera’s VPN Really Free?

Opera provides its browser VPN at no additional cost, and the browser’s VPN feature does not require a separate subscription for its basic functionality.

Opera also says its browser VPN operates under a no-log policy. The company says that policy was independently audited by Deloitte in 2024.

That said, as with any VPN service, it’s worth understanding exactly what is and isn’t protected before relying on it for sensitive activity.

A browser VPN can be useful for protecting browser traffic on an untrusted network, but it isn’t a replacement for a complete security strategy.

Opera VPN vs. a Full VPN Service

The difference becomes clearer when you compare the two approaches.

FeatureOpera Built-in VPNFull VPN Service
Browser trafficYesYes
Other appsNoYes
Public Wi-Fi automationYesDepends on service
Separate VPN appNoUsually
Device-wide protectionNoYes
Additional subscriptionNot required for basic featureUsually required
Multiple devicesBrowser-basedUsually supported

Opera’s solution is therefore best viewed as a convenient browser-level protection feature, rather than a complete replacement for a traditional VPN.

Should You Leave Opera VPN On All the Time?

You don’t necessarily have to.

The new automatic public Wi-Fi option is designed to activate the VPN when you need it and turn it off when you return to a private network.

That can be more convenient than manually switching the VPN on and off throughout the day.

If you primarily want additional protection when using unfamiliar Wi-Fi networks, automatic activation can be a practical option.

However, users who want their entire computer or smartphone protected should consider a dedicated VPN solution instead.

Final Thoughts

Opera’s automatic public Wi-Fi VPN option is a small but useful addition, especially for people who regularly connect to hotel, airport, café or other public networks.

Once enabled, Opera handles the switching automatically, so you don’t have to remember to activate the browser VPN every time you connect.

The most important thing to remember is that Opera’s free VPN only covers traffic inside Opera. It does not protect every application running on your computer.

For occasional browsing on public Wi-Fi, that distinction may be perfectly acceptable. For device-wide protection, however, you’ll need a full VPN solution.
