How to Back Up Your Commodore 64 Games with TrueTape64

Ah, the Commodore 64… This legendary machine that defined the childhood of an entire generation of geeks in the 80s. We spent countless hours immersed in classic games, carefully loaded from our precious audio cassettes. But here we are, 40 years later, and time has taken its toll. The magnetic tapes are inevitably degrading, and our beloved programs risk disappearing forever into the depths of digital oblivion. No need to panic—TrueTape64 is here to save our gaming heritage!

So, how does it work?

A microcontroller, the ATtiny2313, digitizes the audio signal from the Datassette (data tape) with astonishing precision. I won’t dive into the technical details since I’m not an expert, but no worries—TrueTape64 is completely open-source, and everything is available on GitHub: schematics, PCBs, firmware, companion software in Python… All the ingredients are there for you to build your own adapter.

This is an essential accessory for any serious collector, enthusiast, or historian and archaeologist of computing, serving as a powerful defense against the ravages of time that threaten our cherished 8-bit memories.

Have fun and long live the C64!
