How to Effectively Clean a PS5? Complete guide

Cleaning the PS5 is pretty easy and you do not need any specialized skills. Sony’s design also allows users to open the plates without tools and you can clean up the fan without even touching anything else.

In the process, you can also clean the Heatsinks that are underneath the fan. After finishing up, reassemble everything and your console is as good as new.

Warning:

Incorrect handling or using inappropriate tools can void your warranty and harm your console.

How to Properly Clean Your PS5?

Before You Begin

Get in a clean and well-ventilated working area. Avoid working over static-prone materials like a rug. Use safety gear like gloves, face masks, goggles, etc. to avoid any issues due to dust.

Here are the additional items you will need for the cleaning.

  • A Flat Head screwdriver
  • A T8 (Torx) Screwdriver
  • Soft brush
  • Compressed Air can or Air Duster
  • Tweezers
  • Pry tools or Spudger
  • Micro-fiber cloth
  • Isopropyl alcohol

Take the Stand Out

If you use the console in the horizontal position with the stand, it is pretty easy to remove it. Just hold the circular face of the stand and push it away from the console.

If your console is in a vertical position:

  1. First, turn off the PS5 and unplug all of its cables.
  2. Flip it upside down, with the stand facing up.
  3. Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the screw at the center of the stand.
  4. Lift the stand to remove it and set it aside.

Remove and Clean the Side Covers

The next step is taking out the PS5 covers for cleaning. You will require no tools, but if it becomes difficult, you may use a plastic pry or a spudger.

  1. Lift the corner of the top faceplate, the one with a PlayStation logo. Lift it with your fingers until it unclips from the case.
  2. While you lift the corner, slide the plate towards the device’s bottom.
  3. Flip the console and remove the left faceplate as well.
  4. Once both covers are removed, use a regular Vacuum or an Air Duster to clean them.
  5. Use a brush to remove the caked-up dirt stuck on them.
  6. For deep cleaning, use a microfiber cloth with Isopropyl Alcohol.

Clean the Intake Vents

Now, we’re going to clean dust from the air intake and exhausts. This is where the air goes in and out of your console, so cleaning it is paramount.

  1. There are Intake vents on both sides, going along the rounded edge of the PS5.
  2. The plastic piece with the fins can be removed for cleaning. Hold it on one of the ends and pull it up gently.
  3. Use a brush to clean the vents and the plastic piece.
  4. Use Canned Air or the Air Duster to blow off the loose bits of dirt.

Clean the Fan

Removing the fan and cleaning it deeply is also a good idea.

  1. Remove the four Torx screws to remove the fan’s plastic grill.
  2. Remove the black plastic cover beside the fan with a plastic pry.
  3. Use your tweezers to remove the 3-pin Fan connector. Pull it up very gently.
  4. Once free, pull the fan out with your hands.
  5. Clean it with a brush or Compressed Air. Use a bit of alcohol as well.
  6. Clean both sides of the fan properly.
  7. Clean the heatsink fins inside the fan compartment with a brush.

Reassemble the PS5

Once you have finished cleaning the fan, it’s time to put everything back together.

Begin by reinstalling the fan and its connection. Then insert the plastic pieces removed earlier. Put the side covers and the stand back on, to finish things up.

Once done, power on your console and check if everything is working fine.
