Apple’s iOS 26 redesign moves the search field to the bottom in many apps for easier thumb reach. While this is useful for one-handed use, not everyone likes it. If you prefer the classic top search bar, you can still change it in the Phone app and Safari. For other apps like Notes, Messages, or Mail, search remains fixed at the bottom—but there are some practical workarounds.
What You Can Change (and What You Can’t) in iOS 26
According to Apple’s documentation and current builds:
- Phone app → You can switch layouts. The Classic layout restores the top search bar.
- Safari → You can move the address/search bar back to the top in Settings.
- Messages, Mail, Notes, Apple Music, and more → Search stays at the bottom with no toggle.
⚠️ Important: Changing Safari’s bar placement does not affect other apps.
Phone App: Restore the Classic Layout
1- Open the Phone app and go to the Calls view.
2- Tap the menu button (ellipsis or “More” icon) in the upper-right corner.

3- Select Classic layout. This restores the old tab arrangement and puts the search bar back at the top.

4- Confirm the change by checking the Calls or Contacts tab—search should now appear at the top, and the bottom search button disappears.

👉 If you don’t see the option, update to the latest iOS 26 build and recheck. On some devices, the toggle may also appear in Settings > Phone.
Safari: Move the Address/Search Bar to the Top
1- Open Settings on your iPhone.
2- Scroll down, tap Apps, then select Safari.
3- Under the Tabs section, choose Top (or “Single Tab” on some devices).

4- Reopen Safari—the bar should now sit at the top of the screen.

5- You can always switch back to the Bottom or Compact layout later if you prefer.
Workarounds for Other Apps
For apps that don’t let you move search, here are some realistic alternatives:
- Use Spotlight → Swipe down on the Home Screen and type your query (contacts, notes, emails, etc.).
- Use the built-in search field → It’s placed low for easier thumb reach on large screens.
- Use Siri → Ask, “Search Notes for invoices” or “Find emails from Sarah.”
Troubleshooting
- Phone layout option missing? Update to the latest iOS 26 build and check again in the Calls menu or Settings > Phone.
- Safari bar still at the bottom? Revisit Settings > Safari, confirm you selected Top, then restart Safari.
- Messages or Notes search won’t move? That’s expected—Apple currently doesn’t allow changes in those apps.
With iOS 26, you can still restore the classic top search bar in Phone and Safari. For other apps, Apple keeps search at the bottom by design, but Spotlight and Siri can help reduce extra taps.
