Geeky friends and retro video game enthusiasts, today I’m going to tell you about a little gem that should thrill fans of Super Mario Bros: Jelly Mario! Imagine for a moment that our favorite mustached plumber had one too many hallucinogenic mushrooms… Well, that’s kind of what it feels like to play Jelly Mario.
In essence, Jelly Mario is a squishy version of Mario that moves like jelly flowing around. The controls are, to say the least… surprising! When you press the directional keys, Mario stretches in all directions like a rubber band. Trust me, the first few games are pretty hilarious!
But beyond the quirky and wacky aspect, Jelly Mario remains a real platformer with the classic mechanics of Super Mario Bros. You still have to jump on Goombas, avoid traps, and reach the flag at the end of the level. Except with a jelly-like Mario, it becomes a whole lot trickier!
Technically, the game is developed in HTML5 and runs directly in the browser. No installation needed, just head over to https://jellymar.io/ to start playing. The game is free and requires no sign-up. It’s the perfect little addictive game for a quick break at work (but you didn’t hear that from me, okay?).
Visually, the game brings back the colorful, charming pixel art of Super Mario Bros, with jelly-like animations that add a very cartoonish touch. The soundtrack revisits the iconic themes from the series, but with comical sound effects as Mario stretches in all directions. And in terms of level design, the game offers levels inspired by Super Mario Bros, but reworked to make the most of the jelly mechanics. You’ll encounter chasms that can’t be crossed normally and must be navigated by stretching Mario to the max, or secret passages accessible only by squeezing through narrow gaps. It’s clever and well thought-out.
Of course, Jelly Mario isn’t aiming to revolutionize gaming, but it offers a fun experience for all Nintendo fans. It’s the kind of game you launch for a quick session and end up getting stuck on for a good half-hour because it’s so catchy and satisfying.
Personally, I tried several rounds but it’s super hard, and I quickly ended up as subatomic particles.
So, if you want to see Mario in a new light (and on mushrooms), I encourage you to try Jelly Mario right now!
