Today, I want to talk to you about a handy little tool that will make your downloading experience much easier. Its name is imfile, and it’s a multi-source download manager that steps in to replace our beloved Motrix.
For those who missed the previous chapter, Motrix was an excellent software based on aria2 that allowed downloading via many protocols: HTTP, FTP, torrents, magnet links… In short, a very comprehensive tool! Unfortunately, the project eventually fell by the wayside due to a lack of updates. A sad end for such a promising software. 😢
But, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, imfile has come to breathe new life into Motrix! Thanks to the heroic developer @chenjia404, the project has been forked, and it’s back in action. Here’s what’s on the menu:
- Full support for Windows, macOS, and Android (for Linux, you’ll need to compile it yourself for now 😜)
- The ability to download directly by hash (handy for tracking down a specific file)
- Automatic task backup to ensure nothing is lost even in case of a crash
- Regular updates and maintenance to stay up to date
- Written in Go, Vue.js, and Electron, with a SQLite database
And that’s just the current version! According to the developer, we can expect a lot of additional features in the future, such as streaming, resource searching, or even multi-device synchronization. This could seriously rival the big players in the download manager space! 🤩
Compared to Motrix, imfile retains the essential features (HTTP/FTP/Torrent/Magnet download management) but also brings new elements like hash-based downloading and automatic backups. The interface has been revamped while maintaining the same spirit.
Now, head over to the official website to grab the version that corresponds to your OS, click to start the installation, and you’re all set to scour the web for all the hidden treasures it holds.
Personally, I tested the Windows version, and honestly, it works great! I initiated various downloads: Linux ISOs, discographies, TV series… Everything went smoothly. The interface is clear and intuitive. The only downside is the lack of integrated search for now—you have to find your links yourself ^^. But that’s coming soon!
The best part of all this is that imfile is a 100% open-source project!
Alright, enough chit-chat, I’ll let you head over to the imfile site to test it all out.
Happy downloading, everyone! 🚀
