Kyoo: The Open-Source Streaming Alternative to Plex and Jellyfin

Tired of struggling with Plex or Jellyfin to stream your movies and series? Let me introduce you to Kyoo, a newcomer in the world of open-source media centers that’s likely to catch your eye!

Kyoo is like the love child of Plex and Jellyfin, packed with well-thought-out features. Its main focus is simplicity. Once installed, you can say goodbye to the headaches of managing your media library. It automatically scans your files, and like magic, everything is added effortlessly. No need to rename your files or follow a strict folder structure because it’s smart enough to figure it all out.

In terms of features, it offers dynamic transcoding, allowing you to stream in the quality you want, adjusting on the fly with auto-quality. You can even seek without waiting for the transcoder to catch up. Its automatic history feature keeps track of what you’ve watched, with a handy “continue watching” function so you can pick up right where you left off.

For metadata, Kyoo uses the power of Guessit and TheMovieDB to gather information about your files, even if the names are a bit unconventional. For anime, it uses Thexem to manage everything like a pro. You can access Kyoo on Android and the web, streaming from anywhere. The search is lightning-fast thanks to Meilisearch, and there’s support for fast scrubbing, so you can navigate through your media at top speed.

One cool feature is that you can download your media for offline viewing, and your history syncs when you’re back online. It handles subtitles like a champ, supporting SSA/ASS formats and custom fonts. You can also log in using your Google, Discord, or other accounts via OIDC, and automatically mark episodes as watched on services like SIMKL.

Technically, while Plex and Jellyfin bundle everything into a single container with SQLite, Kyoo separates components into dedicated containers when needed, like for search with Meilisearch or transcoding. This allows for better scalability and fully leverages the advantages of each software component.

No more hassle setting up and maintaining your streaming server. Once it’s up and running, it fades into the background and lets you enjoy your movies and series without friction. If you want to see Kyoo in action, check out the demo at https://kyoo.zoriya.dev, which features public domain films.
