Lenovo has consistently produced some of the best Chromebooks I’ve used over the years, and the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 proudly joins that list. This compact 14-inch laptop features a sturdy build, combining aluminum and plastic in its chassis. While it doesn’t stand out with flashy design elements, its build quality is noticeably superior to most Chromebooks on the market.
It’s also the most expensive Chromebook I’ve tested this winter, priced just under $1100. At that price, you could easily buy a basic Windows laptop—but there are solid reasons to invest in this Google-powered machine instead.
With its rounded edges and corners, the Chromebook Plus 14 is comfortable to carry, weighing just 1.26 kg (2.78 lbs). This firmly places it in ultrabook territory.
The aluminum finish on the lid and around the keyboard area gives it a cool, premium feel during use. The keyboard is comfortable, featuring subtle yet effective backlighting and well-balanced key travel that makes typing enjoyable.

The Display Is a Major Highlight
The trackpad is relatively small but works reliably. You also get a touchscreen, which Chrome OS takes full advantage of—especially when running Android apps from the Google Play Store. This reduces the need for a mouse in many situations.

The display itself is glossy and uses OLED technology, instantly making this one of the best Chromebooks I’ve tested in a long time. With DCI-P3 color coverage, perfect contrast, excellent brightness control, and 400 nits of brightness, it delivers an outstanding viewing experience—especially for a laptop under $1,100.
MediaTek Steps Up
One of the most interesting aspects of the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 is its processor. Just as Qualcomm and Microsoft have demonstrated with Windows on ARM, Chrome OS also benefits greatly from ARM-based chips—and this laptop proves it.
Powered by the MediaTek Kompanio Ultra 910, performance is strong enough to rival Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X chips found in Windows laptops. It’s not quite as fast, but it’s close—and clearly outperforms the relatively underwhelming Intel Core 3 and Core i5 processors found in many competing Chromebooks.
MediaTek has yet to enter the PC space broadly, but this chip shows it has the capability to compete. Similar to how its latest Dimensity chips have challenged Qualcomm’s Snapdragon lineup in mobile devices, MediaTek is becoming a serious contender.
Performance is fast and smooth across the board. Web-based tasks run effortlessly, demanding productivity apps perform without issue, and the GPU delivers solid performance for Chrome OS gaming.
You also get:
- 16GB RAM
- 256GB UFS 4.0 storage (very fast)
- Wi-Fi 7 support (still rare even in pricier Windows laptops)

Two Minor Drawbacks
Other positives include a 1440p webcam, surprisingly powerful speakers, and a reliable fingerprint reader that makes logging in much easier than entering Chrome OS’s required PIN.
However, the built-in microphone is somewhat disappointing, picking up more background noise than expected. For professional calls on Teams or Zoom, a USB microphone or headset is recommended.
Port selection is another limitation. You only get:
- 2x USB-C
- 1x USB-A
- 1x headphone jack
There’s no HDMI port, though you can connect an external display via USB-C—leaving you with just one USB-C port available.
A New Era for Chromebooks?
With this level of performance, a bright OLED display, and premium features, battery life becomes a key question. Can MediaTek match Qualcomm’s efficiency?
The answer: yes, surprisingly well.
You get over 13 hours of mixed usage, even with demanding workloads like photo editing, HDR streaming, and occasional gaming. That’s comparable to Intel-based Chromebooks—but with significantly better performance.
Lowering usage intensity extends battery life even further, easily lasting beyond a full workday.
The only thing preventing a perfect score is battery life that—while excellent—is still slightly behind premium Snapdragon X Windows laptops.

Final Verdict
If you’re specifically looking for a Chromebook, this is one of the best options money can buy. It’s expensive for a Chromebook—but relatively affordable for a high-quality laptop.
And make no mistake: this is a great laptop, just running a different operating system than most users are used to.
If more devices in this price range reach this level of quality—and especially if MediaTek chips start appearing in Windows laptops—the entire PC industry should take notice.
