Collaborative writing tools are everywhere — Google Docs, Notion, Dropbox Paper, and many more. They make real-time editing easy, but they all share the same limitation: you need an account, an email address, and you must accept that every document lives in the cloud.
For sensitive or confidential work, that’s far from ideal.
Livnote takes a radically different approach.
It’s a free, open-source text editor that lets you collaborate in real time without cloud storage, accounts, or remote servers. Everything stays on your device, and collaboration happens entirely peer-to-peer (P2P).
Collaborate Without Cloud, Accounts, or Servers

Livnote is a modern, clean note-taking editor built for multi-user collaboration. You can organize notes into folders, write using text blocks, and insert:
- images
- tables
- code snippets
- LaTeX formulas
For Markdown fans, the editor includes full Markdown support with live preview.
There’s also a powerful search tool with find-and-replace, similar to Visual Studio Code.
But the biggest difference?
No login, no server, no online account.
All data remains local, and collaboration works through direct peer-to-peer syncing, meaning nothing ever gets uploaded anywhere — not even temporarily.
How to Download and Install Livnote

Livnote can be downloaded from its official website and is available for:
Just grab the installer for your system and set it up like any normal application.
Create a Secure Local Profile

The first time you launch Livnote, you’ll see two options:
- I already have the key
- I am new here
For new users, click “I am new here.”
You’ll be asked to choose:
- a username
- a password
Both are stored locally — never sent to any server.

At the end of the setup process, Livnote generates a private recovery key.
Make sure to save it somewhere safe. If you forget your password, this is the only way to recover your profile.

After that, you’ll be taken to the main interface.
Organize Notes and Create Your First Document
On the left sidebar, click “New Folder” to create a category for your notes.
Once the folder is created, select it and click “New Note” to start writing.

The editor opens immediately, ready for text input.
You can add new blocks — tables, images, code, LaTeX, etc. — using floating menus or keyboard shortcuts.
How to Invite Someone to Collaborate (P2P)
Livnote supports real-time collaboration, but instead of a cloud server, you connect users directly.
1. Connect to a user
Inside any open note, click “Connect a User.”

A window appears asking for the other person’s Livnote address.
Your collaborator can get their address by clicking their username (top right) and selecting “Copy User Address.”

Paste their address into the field and click “Connect.”

2. Invite them to edit the note
Once connected, click “Invite to edit”, choose the user, and confirm with “Add to collaborate.”

As soon as they accept, you can both begin writing on the same note — with real-time synchronization, entirely peer-to-peer.
Conclusion: A True Privacy-First Collaborative Editor
Livnote stands out in a crowded market by offering something few other tools dare to attempt: real collaborative editing without accounts, servers, or cloud storage.
For journalists, developers, researchers, or anyone handling sensitive documents, it’s a refreshing alternative to traditional online editors — all while remaining lightweight, elegant, and easy to use.
If you value privacy and want full control over your data, Livnote may quickly become your new go-to writing
