Microsoft has offered the first glimpse of its next-generation gaming console. The Redmond giant officially announced Project Helix, the codename for its upcoming hardware, in a statement yesterday.

The announcement came directly from Asha Sharma, Microsoft Gaming’s newly appointed CEO, who confirmed that the console will be capable of running both Xbox and PC games. This ambitious promise is accompanied by serious speculation about deep integration with Windows and major PC gaming platforms such as Steam.

A Next-Gen Console Blurring the Line Between Xbox and PC

While Microsoft has yet to release full technical specifications, the official statements give insight into the console’s philosophy. In a message on X yesterday, Asha Sharma stated that Project Helix “will deliver exceptional performance” and allow users to play both Xbox and PC games. While deliberately vague, this language confirms a trend Xbox has pursued for several years: erasing the boundary between console and PC gaming.

Hardware details remain unconfirmed, but according to Jez Corden of Windows Central, a highly trusted source on all things Xbox, Project Helix is expected to run on a semi-custom AMD x86 chip, the same architecture found in mainstream PCs. This would explain Microsoft’s promise of PC game compatibility.

Steam, Epic, GOG on Xbox? Rumors Stir the Community

Beyond official announcements, insider sources suggest even deeper PC ecosystem integration than Microsoft has confirmed. Jez Corden reports that Project Helix may allow direct access to the Windows desktop from the console, which would enable users to install and run other PC gaming platforms like Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, and Battle.net.

If true, Project Helix wouldn’t just be a next-gen console—it would be a living room PC disguised as a console, or vice versa. This approach is reminiscent of Valve’s Steam Machine, also expected to release this year, potentially setting up direct competition with Microsoft’s new system.

Project Helix: Xbox’s Last-Chance Bet?

The announcement comes at a pivotal moment for Xbox. Phil Spencer, a key figure for over a decade, recently stepped down as CEO of Microsoft Gaming. The mantle now falls to Asha Sharma, and Project Helix marks one of her first major public initiatives—a clear signal of her priorities.

Xbox has faced challenges in recent years: exclusives moving to PlayStation, studio closures, and the Xbox Series X never quite threatening the PS5 in sales. Sharma herself mentioned a “return of Xbox,” reflecting the company’s renewed ambitions. Project Helix is thus more than just a console—it’s a strategic bet on the future of the brand.

More details are expected at GDC 2026, taking place from March 9–13 in San Francisco.
