My PS5 is Blinking Blue: How to Fix the Problem?

Is your PlayStation 5 blinking blue and not turning on properly? This issue, often called the “Blue Light of Death,” can be alarming, but there are solutions to try and fix it. Follow this guide to identify the cause and revive your console.

Possible Causes of the Issue

This blinking blue light can appear in various scenarios. Here, we will summarize the most common ones.

  1. Storage of Unnecessary or Corrupted Files: The presence of unnecessary files or corrupted data can lead to bad configurations stored on your PS5, causing startup problems.
  2. Video Mode or Resolution Issues: An incompatibility or poor support between your PS5 and your screen (TV/monitor) might be causing the problem. The video output (resolution) or HDCP mode could be the culprit.
  3. Faulty HDMI Port or Cable: The issue might stem from an HDMI port (on the PS5 or TV side) or the cable itself, leading to communication errors between devices.
  4. Defective Graphics Card or HDMI Chip: The GPU or HDMI chip might overheat, leading to display issues. If overheating problems persist, it is advisable to contact Sony customer service.
  5. Defective Solder Joints under the APU: The APU (Accelerated Processing Unit) on the PS5 motherboard is dedicated to hardware acceleration. Similar to the GPU and HDMI chip, such hardware issues might require assistance from Sony’s PlayStation support.

Fixing Issues with Safe Mode

This blinking blue light or Blue Light of Death is mainly due to corrupted files in the internal storage, and Safe Mode can be very useful to fix the problem. In most cases, if you don’t have hardware defects, this will work.

To enter Safe Mode, follow these steps:

  1. Turn off your PS5 completely. Press the power button for about 10 to 15 seconds until it shuts down.
  2. Press and hold the power button to turn on your PS5. You should hear a first “beep,” then a second one a few seconds later, then you can release the power button.
  3. The Safe Mode welcome screen should appear on your TV. To navigate, you need to connect your controller via a USB port and press the PlayStation button.

Safe Mode offers 7 different options. For the blinking blue light issue, options “6: Reset PS5” and “7: Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software)” have proven effective against this issue within the PlayStation 5 community. If a simple reset (option 6) does not fix the problem, choose the system reinstallation (option 7). However, make sure to back up your data to the PlayStation Plus cloud if you opt for this latter solution.

In some cases, option “5: Rebuild Database” can help by removing unnecessary or corrupted files. Finally, if the problem is video-related, option “2: Change Video Output” can help resolve incompatibility issues that may be causing the Blue Light of Death.

Fixing Hardware Issues

There are other cases where Safe Mode may not help or simply may not appear. If you suspect a hardware problem, a few steps can help fix the issue if it is not too severe. Before contacting Sony’s PlayStation support, try these solutions:

  1. Reconnect all your connections. Completely turn off your PS5 and carefully disconnect/reconnect the entire setup before restarting.
  2. Use another HDMI cable or try a different HDMI port. As a precaution, always keep your HDMI ports clean by using compressed air and avoid twisting and wearing out the cable.
  3. Try your PS5 on another screen. If the problem stems from your screen setup, try connecting your console to another monitor, like a PC screen, to see if the issue persists.
  4. Give your console some air. If it overheats, let your PS5 cool down. If possible, try to ensure better ventilation in your setup to avoid overheating risks.

Lastly, a useful tip: avoid using Rest Mode. Crashes, black screens, overheating—the PS5 community has reported many issues related to this standby mode. Instead of using Rest Mode, always completely turn off your PS5 to help it cool down and ensure the longevity of its components.

Conclusion:

If the problem persists after these steps, it is advisable to contact Sony’s technical support or seek professional help. Have you encountered this problem before? Share your solutions in the comments!
