OpenAI is adding a brand-new layer to ChatGPT: integrated applications. Users can now interact directly with services like Canva, Spotify, Booking.com, Figma, Coursera, and Zillow—all without leaving the chatbot interface.

This new feature, announced at DevDay 2025, also comes with an Apps SDK for developers, enabling them to build custom apps for ChatGPT and expand conversations with interactive functionality.

Apps That Activate Mid-Conversation

Using an app inside ChatGPT is simple: just call it by name during your chat. For example:

  • Spotify, make me a playlist for running
  • Canva, create a flyer for our garage sale
  • Booking.com, find me a hotel in Paris this weekend

Once detected, ChatGPT activates the app in the background and displays an integrated interface—cards, visuals, forms, or buttons—right within the conversation. Everything happens seamlessly, without changing pages.

ChatGPT can also suggest apps automatically when it detects they might be useful. Suggestions are optional, and you can ignore them if you prefer.

Examples already showcased include:

  • A playlist generated via Spotify,
  • Searching for hotels with Booking.com,
  • Designing a presentation in Canva,
  • Running a flight search with Expedia.

The First Wave of ChatGPT Apps

At launch, only a handful of partners are integrated—but they’re big names:

  • Spotify → create playlists, discover artists, get recommendations.
  • Canva → generate visuals, slides, posters, or social media content.
  • Booking.com & Expedia → search hotels, flights, and vacation packages.
  • Figma → design diagrams, wireframes, and flowcharts.
  • Coursera → browse and access courses.
  • Zillow → explore real estate listings in the U.S.

OpenAI has shared a demo video showing exactly how these integrations look inside ChatGPT.

A Developer SDK: Build Your Own Apps

Alongside user-facing integrations, OpenAI has released an Apps SDK to let developers build their own ChatGPT apps.

  • Built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP),
  • Allows AI to interact with apps and display interactive elements,
  • Supports custom UIs, usage rules, and even optional paid features.

Currently, only select partners have early access. But OpenAI plans a wider rollout by the end of the year, with a dedicated app submission and discovery hub inside ChatGPT.

Privacy, Restrictions, and EU Limitations

As with many ChatGPT features, Europe is left waiting. Integrated apps aren’t yet available in the EU, with OpenAI only promising they will arrive “soon.” For now, they’re limited to users signed into an OpenAI account (Free, Go, Plus, or Pro) outside the EU, depending on regional app availability.

On privacy:

  • Each app can access part of the conversation context,
  • You must approve the data sharing on first use,
  • Only “necessary information” is shared—but OpenAI hasn’t clarified retention or scope.

Some open questions remain, such as how apps are selected for auto-suggestions or how OpenAI will handle conflicts between competing services. Nothing alarming yet, but it’s worth keeping an eye on.
