At work, school, or while traveling, protect your laptop from theft with a Kensington lock or locking station. This guide explains how they work and how to secure your laptop, whether it’s a PC or a Mac.

Many of us rely on laptops for personal use, studies, or work. They’re incredibly convenient, allowing us to work, learn, or entertain ourselves anywhere.

However, laptops are expensive and attractive to thieves, not to mention the valuable information they contain. A brief absence, like a quick chat with a colleague or a restroom break, can be enough for a laptop to be stolen.

This lapse in attention can compromise your data and create a financial burden.

Some laptop models have a small port not designed for connecting wires or peripherals. This is a Kensington port, used for attaching a lock to protect your computer and give you peace of mind!

How to Protect a Laptop

Kensington is a company that offers various peripherals, including ergonomic keyboards, professional headphones, and video conferencing kits. However, they’re best known for their laptop protection solutions: Kensington locks!

These locks deter thieves from trying to steal your computer.

How to Use a Laptop Lock

These locks consist of a steel cable with a lock that inserts directly into the laptop.

They have small clasps with teeth that grip the inside of the computer. Using a small button, you can deploy these clasps, and this button is then locked.

At the other end, there’s a pre-made loop that you can pass through a chair leg or wrap around a table leg. The goal is to secure your laptop to an object or piece of furniture to deter potential thieves.

Types of Kensington Locks

There are primarily two types of Kensington locks: combination locks and key locks.

You’ll also need to check the type of Kensington port your laptop has. There are three main types:

  • Standard (K slot)
  • Nano
  • Wedge-Shaped Slots

If you’re unsure, refer to your laptop’s user guide or search online based on your laptop model.

Finally, if your laptop doesn’t have a Kensington port, locking stations are available that you can attach to your laptop.

Costs range from approximately 30 to 100$.
