Planning to build a new PC or upgrade your current setup? Bad timing. Over the last few weeks, prices for RAM, SSDs, and even hard drives have shot up dramatically — in some cases doubling in under two months. And unfortunately, the trend is still climbing.

The culprit? A new memory shortage hitting the entire industry. Retailers in Japan have already started limiting in-store purchases, and major online sellers are showing steep price jumps across the board.

Behind all of this is one word dominating the tech world: AI. Artificial intelligence isn’t just devouring GPUs — it’s draining global supplies of DRAM and NAND flash memory, creating a shockwave that’s now affecting everyday consumers.

AI Is the Semiconductor Industry’s New Priority

Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI — every major player is all-in on artificial intelligence. And running these massive AI models requires three things:

  • Compute power
  • GPUs
  • Huge amounts of memory

And not just a little — massive quantities.

These tech giants are placing enormous bulk orders with chip manufacturers, consuming an outsized share of the global supply. Naturally, chipmakers are shifting their production priorities toward their biggest, most profitable clients:
cloud providers, datacenters, and AI infrastructure companies.

As a result:

  • Consumer hardware (DDR5, DDR4, SSDs, HDDs, GPUs) becomes a secondary priority
  • Production slows
  • Inventory shrinks
  • Prices surge

Classic supply and demand: when supply drops and demand stays high, prices skyrocket — exactly what’s happening now.

DDR5, DDR4, SSDs: How Bad Are the Price Hikes?

Since September 2025, memory and storage prices have exploded worldwide. In the U.S., this translates into major jumps on Amazon, Newegg, and Micro Center — especially for popular kits.

Below is the price evolution you would typically see when converting the original European market trend to the U.S. market.

DDR5 — 32GB (2×16GB) Kits

ModelSept 2025 PriceNov 2025 PriceChange
DDR5-6000 CL30~$140~$230+64%
DDR5-6400 CL32~$150~$250+67%
DDR5-6400 CL30~$190~$300+58%

DDR4 — 16GB (2×8GB) Kits

ModelSept 2025 PriceNov 2025 PriceChange
DDR4-3200 CL16~$70~$120+71%
DDR4-3600 CL16~$85~$125+47%

Even older generations aren’t spared. Manufacturers are slowly phasing out DDR4 production to focus on DDR5, shrinking supply and pushing prices higher.

What About SSDs? Prices Are Climbing There Too

The same issue is hitting NAND flash, the core of all SSDs. Since datacenter-grade drives have higher margins, manufacturers are redirecting flash supply toward enterprise and AI workloads.

This creates several ripple effects on consumer SSDs:

  • Popular NVMe drives are seeing double-digit price increases
  • Large-capacity SATA SSDs are getting harder to find
  • Multiple brands are already adjusting MSRPs upward

Expect price instability for at least the next few months.

How Long Will This Shortage Last?

According to analysts, the situation won’t improve quickly. The current crunch may last until mid-2026 or longer. Memory manufacturers are cautious: expanding production or building new fabs takes years, not months.

And with talk of a potential “AI bubble,” companies are nervous about overinvesting. No one wants warehouses full of unsold chips if AI spending suddenly slows down.

In the meantime:

  • DDR5 keeps rising
  • DDR4 is becoming harder to find
  • SSDs are trending upward, especially 2TB and larger capacities

Even for Black Friday 2025, don’t expect meaningful discounts on RAM or SSDs. At best, you might find deals on slower or less popular kits.

Bottom Line

If you need RAM or SSDs for a build right now, buy sooner rather than later. Prices are still climbing, supply is tightening, and AI-driven demand is putting everyday consumers at the bottom of the priority list.
