Setting a Portable Application as Default: A Step-by-Step Guide

Are you tired of struggling with your portable Firefox or Thunderbird email client on a USB key? When you click on a web link or a “mailto:”, it’s the default software of the OS that launches and not your portable version.

Don’t worry; I have THE solution for you: Portable Registrator!

This little app allows you to easily register any portable application as the default program on Windows. As a result, you can open web links directly with the portable browser of your choice without any stress.

During the first start, a configuration file generates default parameters that correspond to different types of applications (AppTypes). The AppTypes available by default are web browsers and email clients.

But that’s not all! To be as flexible as possible, you can add any type of application to the configuration file. Simply create a new “AppType” section and customize it according to your needs. Whether it’s for an image viewer, a text editor, a video player, or any other application, everything is possible!

With Portable Registrator, you can finally take your favorite applications with you wherever you go, without having to worry about default programs. Say goodbye to the frustration of opening links with the wrong program and hello to a smoother and more personalized portable experience!

Visit the project’s GitHub repository for more information on Portable Registrator setup and features.

To use it, just follow these steps:

  • Unzip the archive and launch the “PortableRegistrator.exe” file.
  • Choose the type of application (AppType) that you want to save as the default program.
  • Select the portable application’s executable file.
  • Click “Save”, your portable application is now set as the default program!

Portable Registrator is compatible with Windows 7, 8 and 10 (compatibility with Windows 11 has not yet been tested).
