Do you miss the good old days when Google Chrome had that distinctive look back in 2012? Well, Silverfox is here to bring back that era through Mozilla Firefox ESR!
This unique open-source theme meticulously recreates the iconic appearance of Chrome from a decade ago. From trapezoidal tabs to the parallelogram-shaped new tab button, to a clean speed dial and a download bar at the bottom, every detail has been carefully reproduced. The creators even went as far as to include a custom hamburger menu (with an optional wrench icon) and the tiny window buttons from that time.
But Silverfox isn’t just an approximate theme… No, the authors have strived to stay as close to the original as possible, also recreating incognito mode with its ominous character, integrated window information bars, and redesigned settings, extensions, and error pages. They even included the original Chrome profile avatars, those characters that appeared at the top of the title bar, and more.
The theme also offers a range of additional settings accessible from a Chrome-style flags page. These options allow you to further enhance the Chrome experience by enabling more features and behaviors from the past, such as switching to Chromium branding, using Chrome OS window controls, or for Linux users, using toolbar icons from the Humanity era.
Windows users aren’t left out either, as Silverfox also supports Aero on Windows 7, as well as glassy effects provided by software like Glass8 and DWMBlurGlass. Of course, this isn’t relevant on Linux, where we get a classic GTK title bar (though you can activate the blue background with a single click). To try Silverfox yourself, keep in mind that it only works with Mozilla Firefox ESR 115, not the regular version of Firefox. It’s also not compatible with Flatpak or Snap versions of ESR. Therefore, I recommend using the Linux binary version of ESR if you don’t plan on making it your primary browser.
