For years, Siri struggled with the same basic problems: losing the context of a conversation, misunderstanding follow-up questions, and failing whenever a request required more than a simple command.

Apple promised a much more capable Siri during its earlier Apple Intelligence push, but the biggest upgrades took longer than expected.

That wait is finally over.

With the release of iOS 27 on September 14, 2026, Apple has begun rolling out Siri AI, a completely redesigned version of its voice assistant powered by the next generation of Apple Intelligence. Unlike a simple interface refresh, Siri AI is designed to understand personal context, answer more complex questions, understand what’s on your screen, search across your apps, and perform actions across the system.

There is one important catch: Siri AI is launching as a beta, and availability depends heavily on your iPhone, language, and region.

Here’s everything you need to know.

When Did Siri AI Launch?

Apple began rolling out Siri AI on September 14, 2026, alongside iOS 27 and Apple’s other major software updates.

However, this isn’t a traditional “everyone gets the new Siri immediately” release.

Siri AI is currently rolling out as a beta in English, while Apple says support for French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish is coming in October.

Apple is also restricting Siri AI in some regions.

Most notably, Siri AI is not initially available on iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch in the European Union. Apple says the delay is related to the Digital Markets Act and that it currently has no announced timeline for bringing the feature to iOS and iPadOS in the EU.

China is also excluded while Apple works through local regulatory requirements.

Which iPhones Support Siri AI?

Siri AI requires an Apple Intelligence-capable device.

For iPhone, that means:

iPhoneSiri AI / Apple Intelligence
iPhone 15 ProYes
iPhone 15 Pro MaxYes
iPhone 16 seriesYes
iPhone 17 seriesYes, depending on model
iPhone 18 seriesYes
Older iPhonesNo

Apple’s official compatibility list for Apple Intelligence includes the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, plus iPhone 16 models and newer.

This distinction is important because installing iOS 27 doesn’t automatically mean your iPhone gets every Siri AI capability.

Older compatible iPhones may receive the operating system update and its regular features, but Apple’s most demanding intelligence features require supported hardware.

Siri Finally Understands Follow-Up Questions

One of the biggest changes is conversational continuity.

Old Siri often treated every request as a completely separate command.

You could ask:

“What’s the weather tomorrow?”

Then follow up with:

“What about Saturday?”

And Siri might not reliably understand what “Saturday” referred to.

Siri AI is designed to handle much more natural conversations.

You can ask a question, add another request, correct yourself, and continue the conversation without constantly repeating the original context.

Apple describes Siri AI as capable of handling richer conversations and follow-up questions, while also using personal context to provide more relevant answers.

This is arguably more important than making Siri’s voice sound more natural.

It changes Siri from a collection of isolated voice commands into something closer to a conversational assistant.

Siri AI Can Search Your Personal Information

This is where Apple’s new Siri becomes considerably more useful.

Siri AI can use personal context to find information across parts of your Apple ecosystem.

For example, you could ask Siri to:

  • Find a hotel confirmation from an old email
  • Locate a restaurant recommendation someone sent you
  • Find photos from a particular trip
  • Retrieve information from Messages
  • Find information in your emails
  • Connect information across multiple apps
  • Use information from supported third-party apps

Apple gives an example where Siri searches Messages to discover what a family member suggested doing during an upcoming visit, then retrieves a recipe from an email and adds the ingredients to a grocery list in Reminders.

That’s a significant change from asking Siri to simply set a timer or send a text.

Third-Party Apps Can Get Involved Too

Apple’s personal-context system isn’t limited to Apple’s own applications.

Third-party developers can integrate their apps with Apple’s system frameworks, allowing Siri AI to find and act on information from supported apps.

Apple says users can already perform actions in apps such as WhatsApp and Audible, while additional integrations are coming for applications including Microsoft Outlook, Notability, and Tripsy.

That could eventually make Siri considerably more useful as a system-wide assistant rather than an Apple-only command interface.

Siri Can See What’s on Your Screen

Another major feature is onscreen awareness.

Siri AI can understand information displayed on your screen and use that context to answer questions or perform actions.

For example, you might be looking at a webpage for a sports team and ask Siri to find its upcoming home games and add them to your calendar.

Or you could be reading a message about a dinner event and ask Siri to help you create a related reminder.

Apple says Siri AI can use onscreen awareness to understand content and take actions related to what you’re currently viewing.

This is one of the features that most clearly separates the new Siri from the assistant that existed before Apple Intelligence.

Siri AI Gets a New Camera Mode

Siri is also becoming more visual.

On iPhone, Apple has integrated Siri’s multimodal capabilities into the Camera app through a new Siri mode.

You can point the camera at something in the real world and ask Siri about it.

Apple’s examples include:

  • Understanding objects
  • Getting information about what you’re seeing
  • Analyzing food
  • Taking actions based on visual information
  • Splitting a bill with friends
  • Adding information to Wallet

Apple says users can tap the shutter button to let Siri see what they’re seeing and then interact with the result.

This effectively turns Siri into a multimodal assistant rather than a purely voice-based one.

Siri AI Can Work Across Apps

The new assistant isn’t designed simply to answer questions.

Apple wants Siri to complete tasks.

For example, Siri can now help with workflows such as:

  1. Finding information in Messages.
  2. Opening related content from another app.
  3. Creating a reminder.
  4. Adding something to your calendar.
  5. Drafting an email.
  6. Editing and sharing photos.

Apple describes this as expanded systemwide app actions.

The important word here is action.

Previous generations of Siri often stopped after giving you an answer.

Siri AI is designed to continue into the next step.

A Dedicated Siri App Finally Exists

Apple has also given Siri something it never really had before: its own dedicated app.

The new Siri app lets you:

  • Start a new conversation
  • Review previous conversations
  • Return to an earlier discussion
  • Continue a conversation later
  • Move conversations between Apple devices

The conversation history can be privately synchronized through iCloud across supported Apple devices.

That means you can start a conversation on your iPhone and continue it later on a Mac, iPad, Apple Watch, or Apple Vision Pro.

For users who regularly switch between Apple devices, this could become one of the most useful additions.

Siri AI Can Also Write and Edit for You

Apple is integrating Siri with its writing capabilities as well.

With Write with Siri, users can describe what they want and have Siri generate a draft.

You can also ask it to modify something you’ve already written.

For example:

  • Make this email more professional
  • Shorten this message
  • Rewrite this paragraph
  • Improve the wording
  • Make the tone friendlier

Apple says Siri can also adapt writing to the way you normally communicate with different recipients, including your usual punctuation and tone.

This makes Siri more closely connected to Apple’s broader Writing Tools system.

Siri’s Voice Is More Expressive

Siri AI also gets a major voice upgrade.

On devices supporting Apple’s most advanced on-device model, users can customize the expressiveness and pace of Siri’s voice.

Apple says the same advanced model also improves systemwide dictation, allowing the system to better handle punctuation, capitalization, formatting, and natural speech.

Apple’s most advanced on-device model is available on:

  • iPhone Duo
  • iPhone 18 Pro
  • iPhone 18 Pro Max
  • iPhone Air
  • iPhone 17 Pro
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max
  • iPad models with M4 or later and at least 12GB unified memory
  • Mac models with M3 or later and at least 12GB unified memory
  • Apple Vision Pro with M5

So the more expressive Siri voice is not limited to just the newest iPhone models.

Siri AI Is Still a Beta

This is worth emphasizing.

Even though Apple has released Siri AI alongside iOS 27, the new assistant is still rolling out as a beta.

That means availability and behavior can change as Apple improves the system.

Some features may also depend on:

  • Device hardware
  • Language
  • Region
  • App integration
  • Server availability
  • Apple’s daily usage limits

Apple says certain Apple Intelligence features relying on server-side models are subject to daily limits, with the exact limits varying according to factors such as feature, request complexity, system demand, and policy.

So don’t expect every Siri AI capability to behave identically for every user.

What About Privacy?

Because Siri AI can potentially access personal information from Messages, Mail, Photos, and other apps, privacy becomes especially important.

Apple says its new Apple Intelligence architecture combines on-device processing with Private Cloud Compute.

When processing can be performed locally, the request stays on the device.

For more demanding workloads, Apple says Private Cloud Compute allows requests to be processed on Apple’s servers while keeping personal data from being stored or made accessible to Apple. Apple also says outside experts can verify its privacy claims.

This is an important part of Apple’s pitch for Siri AI.

The company isn’t simply trying to make Siri smarter. It is trying to make a highly personalized assistant while maintaining its existing privacy positioning.

Siri AI Is Not Available on iPhone and iPad in the EU

For European users, there is an important limitation.

Apple has confirmed that Siri AI is not available initially on iOS, iPadOS, or watchOS in the European Union.

Apple attributes the delay to the Digital Markets Act and says it is continuing to work toward a solution.

There is currently no announced timeline for Siri AI’s arrival on iPhone and iPad in the EU.

EU users can, however, access Siri AI on macOS 27 and visionOS 27 when using a supported language.

What Languages Does Siri AI Support?

At launch, Siri AI is rolling out in English.

Apple says French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish support is coming in October 2026.

Apple Intelligence itself supports a broader set of languages, but that should not be confused with Siri AI availability.

This is an important distinction: having Apple Intelligence available in a language does not necessarily mean every Siri AI capability is already available in that language.

Siri AI and Apple Intelligence Are Not Exactly the Same Thing

Apple’s terminology can make this confusing.

Apple Intelligence is the broader AI platform powering features across Apple’s operating systems.

Siri AI is the redesigned assistant built on top of that technology.

Apple Intelligence also powers features in:

  • Photos
  • Safari
  • Messages
  • Mail
  • Image Playground
  • Writing Tools
  • Calendar
  • Shortcuts
  • Visual Intelligence

Siri AI is therefore just one major part of Apple’s larger intelligence strategy.

What Siri AI Still Can’t Do

Despite the huge upgrade, Siri AI isn’t a magical AI agent that can control everything on your iPhone.

There are still limitations.

Availability depends on the device and region, third-party app actions depend on developer integration, some advanced models operate under daily usage limits, and Siri AI remains in beta.

Apple is also continuing to expand language support.

So while the new Siri is substantially more capable, users shouldn’t expect every promised AI workflow to work universally on day one.

How to Get Siri AI on Your iPhone

If you’re using a supported iPhone, start by updating to iOS 27.

Go to:

Settings → General → Software Update

Install iOS 27, then make sure your device language and Siri settings are configured for a supported language.

If Siri AI still doesn’t appear, check these factors:

  1. Your iPhone model
  2. Your language
  3. Your region
  4. Whether Siri AI is available in your market
  5. Whether the feature has finished rolling out to your device

For users in the EU, the limitation is currently regional rather than a problem with the iPhone itself.

Is Siri AI Finally Worth Using?

For years, Siri was useful primarily for simple commands:

  • Set a timer
  • Call someone
  • Send a message
  • Set an alarm
  • Check the weather
  • Start navigation

Siri AI changes the equation.

The combination of personal context, conversational memory, onscreen awareness, visual understanding, web knowledge, and systemwide actions gives Siri considerably more potential than its previous command-based model.

The biggest question now isn’t whether Apple has finally made Siri smarter.

It has.

The real question is how reliably Siri AI performs these tasks in everyday use.

That’s something Apple will have to prove through continued updates, third-party app support, and real-world testing.

Final Thoughts

The biggest change in iOS 27 isn’t another redesigned Siri animation.

It’s the fact that Siri is finally becoming a system-level AI assistant rather than a voice-command utility.

Siri AI can understand follow-up questions, search your personal information, see what’s on your screen, analyze things through the camera, work across apps, generate and refine text, and keep conversations synchronized between Apple devices.

That’s a fundamentally different role for Siri.

There are still significant limitations. Siri AI is launching as a beta, language support is expanding gradually, advanced capabilities depend on compatible hardware, and users in the European Union won’t get Siri AI on iPhone or iPad at launch.

But after years of waiting, Apple has finally delivered the Siri overhaul it promised.

If you have an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone and live in a supported region, iOS 27 is the first major Siri update that could genuinely change how you use Apple’s assistant every day.
