In the mid-90s, a wave of spinoffs emerged, expanding the adventures of our beloved plumber, Super Mario. The one known for his extraordinary jumps! And who better to craft an RPG than the genre specialists, Square? No one. This collaboration was a triumph, and as someone who missed out on the Super Nintendo era, I’m thrilled to finally experience it with this new remake on the Switch!
As always, the first striking feature is the graphics. The display is remarkably crisp, animations are incredibly fluid, and modern lighting effects complement the original’s unique atmosphere. The character design strikes a balance between adorable and quirky, a feature I truly appreciate.
The music, re-orchestrated with the option to listen to the SNES versions, is a treat for the ears. As is typical with Nintendo’s flagship titles, everything is impeccably executed—intuitive, aesthetically pleasing, and meticulously detailed. It’s clean, charming, and overall, superbly crafted.
Now, what about the game itself? Can you believe it’s an RPG—Role Playing Game, and a Japanese-style one at that! You traverse the world, engage in conversations, battle foes, earn experience points, levels, acquire new attacks, purchase/find items for improvement, recruit team members, and discover hidden chests. A true classic!
But it’s not just any classic; it’s exceptionally well-crafted. The linear yet amusing story keeps you guessing, and the characters are surprisingly funny and unexpected. 🙂 The combat system, while somewhat conventional, introduces originality by requiring well-timed attacks, akin to a rhythm game. Numerous delightful details enhance the experience.
No more random battles (hooray!): enemies appear on the map, allowing you to choose whether to confront or avoid them. Additionally, there are abundant secrets and puzzles that demand keen observation. 🕵️ It’s a gratifying game, consistently enjoyable, and for some reason, playing it always lifts my spirits.
I’ll keep it concise to avoid spoilers because surprise and discovery are integral to the experience. 🙂 One might lament the game’s relative ease, but it’s not a major issue. While it’s not a walk in the park, true challenges are reserved for the post-game. 😉
In terms of playtime, expect around 15 hours to complete the main story and a solid 20 hours for 100% completion. In summary, unless you dislike this style of gameplay, the directed nature of this RPG, or Mario and his universe, I wholeheartedly recommend this game! I give it a solid 🍄🍄🍄🍄/5.
