In September 2023, in response to the meteoric rise of ChatGPT, the investment fund Andreessen Horowitz, based in Silicon Valley and specializing in new technologies, took the initiative to compile a list of the 50 most-used generative AI tools worldwide. At that time, the chatbot designed by OpenAI stood out, capturing 60% of monthly AI-related traffic and ranking as the 24th most visited site globally.
But how has the situation evolved? And what new tools have emerged in recent months? To answer these questions, the investment fund conducted the same exercise again, relying on data provided by SimilarWeb up to January 2024. Here are the main findings of the survey, the results of which were unveiled on Wednesday, 13 March.
ChatGPT continues to dominate, but the market is expanding
The first conclusion of the report is that the AI market is expanding and, above all, becoming increasingly competitive. According to the investment fund, “more than 40% of the solutions appearing in the ranking are new.” In this updated list, no fewer than twenty-two generative AI solutions appear. Some of them are meeting with notable success, such as the assistant Liner (4th), the fictitious chatbot generator JanitorAI (8th), and the chatbot Claude (10th), developed by Anthropic. However, there is little movement at the top of the rankings. ChatGPT still largely dominates the market, now accumulating almost 2 billion visits each month, that is, “five times more visits than the tool in second place, Bard, which has become Gemini,” the investment fund details. Character.ai and QuillBot remain in the top 5, while Poe drops to sixth place, leaving the top five.
Here are the 10 most used generative AI platforms each month :
- ChatGPT
- Gemini (formerly Bard)
- character.ai
- Liner
- QuillBot
- Poe
- Perplexity
- JanitorAI
- CivitAI
- Claude

The Road Ahead: Navigating the Generative AI Landscape
As we look to the future, the generative AI landscape is poised to undergo unprecedented growth and transformation. The tools we have discussed represent merely the tip of the iceberg, with researchers and developers continually pushing the boundaries of what is possible with these cutting-edge technologies.
One area of particular interest is the intersection of generative AI and multimodal processing. As language models become increasingly adept at understanding and generating not only text but also images, audio, and video, we can expect to see a surge in tools that seamlessly blend these modalities. Imagine AI assistants capable of generating captivating multimedia presentations, or creative tools that allow users to describe a scene or concept and instantly generate a corresponding visual representation.
Another exciting frontier is the integration of generative AI with domain-specific knowledge and expertise. While the current generation of tools excels at general-purpose tasks, the future may hold highly specialized AI models tailored to specific industries or fields, such as medicine, law, or engineering. These specialized models could leverage both generative capabilities and domain-specific knowledge bases to provide expert-level assistance, analysis, and decision support.
Moreover, the democratization of AI technology is poised to accelerate, making these powerful tools more accessible to individuals, small businesses, and organizations across various sectors. As the barriers to entry continue to lower, we can expect to see a proliferation of innovative use cases and applications, driven by the creativity and ingenuity of a diverse range of users.
However, as the generative AI landscape evolves, it is crucial to address the ethical, legal, and societal implications of these technologies. Issues such as data privacy, intellectual property rights, and the potential for AI-generated content to spread misinformation or perpetuate biases must be carefully navigated. Ongoing research and dialogue among experts, policymakers, and the broader public will be essential to develop robust frameworks and guidelines for the responsible development and deployment of generative AI.
Additionally, as these tools become more integrated into our daily lives and workflows, it will be crucial to foster a deep understanding of their capabilities and limitations. While generative AI can augment and enhance human intelligence in remarkable ways, it should never be viewed as a replacement for human expertise, creativity, and critical thinking. Instead, we must strive to cultivate a symbiotic relationship between humans and AI, leveraging the strengths of each to achieve greater innovation and progress.
A Dramatic Breakthrough in Content Generators
At the same time, Andreessen Horowitz examined the main categories of tools used. While “general assistants” such as ChatGPT stood out in September, it is now content generators (images, videos, etc.) that are dominating the market, as illustrated in the chart below. The investment fund also noted the emergence of two new categories: music generators, represented by Suno (36th), and productivity tools. “The productivity category includes seven solutions in the ranking,” Andreessen Horowitz observes, including Liner, Otter.ai, and ChatPDF.
ChatGPT, also king on mobile
In this second survey, Andreessen Horowitz also ranked mobile apps with AI-powered features, based on data provided by Sensor Tower through January 2024. Again, there was no surprise: ChatGPT, which has a mobile version on iOS and Android, comes out on top. The tool designed by OpenAI is ahead of Microsoft Edge, Photomath, Bing, and Remini. The Copilot app, recently unveiled by Microsoft, ranks only in the 40th position.
Even more surprising, many of the apps on the list have names eerily similar to ChatGPT. “This is partly because ChatGPT was slow to launch its app, creating an opportunity for copycats, especially if they pay for advertisements,” according to the investment fund. These applications, known as fleeceware, deceive the user by charging for access to a model made available free of charge by ChatGPT. “These apps frequently change their name and description, making it more difficult for app stores,” Horowitz noted.
In conclusion, the generative AI landscape is poised for incredible growth and transformation in the coming years. As we navigate this exciting yet complex terrain, we must approach these advancements with a thoughtful and responsible mindset, prioritizing ethical considerations, promoting transparency, and fostering a deep understanding of the capabilities and limitations of these powerful tools. By striking the right balance, we can harness the transformative potential of generative AI while ensuring that it remains a force for good, enhancing human potential and driving progress in a manner that aligns with our values and aspirations.
