On July 18, 2025, MEGA quietly launched Transfer.it, a new file transfer service. The timing was strategic: just days earlier, WeTransfer found itself embroiled in controversy following the publication of a clause in its terms of service that was deemed ambiguous. Suspected of using shared files to train its artificial intelligence, WeTransfer quickly denied the accusations, clarifying that its AI was only used to detect potentially illegal content.

Amid this turmoil, MEGA seized the opportunity to introduce its own alternative—with a very tempting promise: unlimited transfers, no file size limits, no account required, and a minimalist interface. But behind this apparent generosity, some limitations are worth highlighting.

A Simplified Interface for Sending Large Files

Transfer.it follows the familiar formula of traditional transfer services: a large central button to add one or more files, the option to send via a link or email address, and a few customization features accessible with a single click.

Where the service truly stands out is in the generosity of its offering. MEGA sets the tone from the start: no size limits, no restrictions on the number of files, downloads, or recipients. In other words, you can send 100 GB, 1 TB, or even more—for free and without creating an account.

Key features include:

  • Password protection for shared files
  • Expiration dates (up to 90 days by default)
  • Email notifications when a file is viewed or downloaded
  • Built-in preview for shared images, videos, or documents
  • File sharing via link or email

For MEGA account holders, the service integrates directly with their cloud storage. This allows you to send files already hosted in your account, track ongoing transfers, and even extend the expiration date or delete transfers manually—the latter available with a paid subscription.

Encryption… But Not Zero-Knowledge

MEGA has built its reputation on privacy, particularly through end-to-end encryption, where only the user holds the keys. With Transfer.it, the model changes slightly.

Files are encrypted on the client side before being uploaded—but the decryption keys are managed by MEGA. This means it’s not zero-knowledge encryption. In the event of a legal request, MEGA could technically access the contents of the files.

According to its official documentation:

  • Files remain encrypted at rest
  • Decryption occurs temporarily in memory during download
  • No decrypted data is stored on disk
  • Keys are stored in a dedicated, isolated, and secure system

While this is reassuring on paper, it still requires trust in MEGA’s infrastructure. For highly sensitive or confidential documents, it’s better to opt for a service offering true end-to-end encryption, or to self-host a transfer solution.

Free… But Until When?

MEGA makes it clear: Transfer.it is completely free, with no size or usage limitations—until January 1, 2026. After that, MEGA plans to introduce what it calls “generous and unmatched limits” for free accounts. In other words, the current unlimited offering won’t last forever.

To avoid future restrictions, users can opt for Transfer.it Pro, priced at €2.99/month. The paid version includes:

  • Transfers without expiration
  • Unlimited downloads
  • Unlimited recipients
  • Full integration with MEGA Pro accounts

It’s also worth noting that starting January 1, 2026, free users will likely face some limits. One article, for instance, suggests a potential cap of 100 downloads per transfer for non-paying users—though this hasn’t yet been confirmed on the official site.

In short, for now, Transfer.it is playing the “everything free, everything unlimited” card—but this model clearly comes with an expiration date.

Should You Use Transfer.it?

With Transfer.it, MEGA introduces a strong alternative to traditional file-sharing services. The interface is clean, the features are solid, and most importantly: there’s no file size limit, which is rare—especially for a free service.

However, this generosity has a deadline. Until January 1, 2026, anyone can use it without restrictions. After that, limitations will be introduced (though MEGA promises they’ll remain reasonable).

On the security front, Transfer.it is more transparent than some competitors—but it doesn’t offer true end-to-end encryption. Files are protected, yes—but not as securely as with MEGA’s standard cloud service. If privacy is your top priority, this might not be the right solution.

For most other use cases, however, Transfer.it gets the job done—and gets it done well. And until 2026, you might as well make the most of it.
