Since the launch of Windows 11, a small but annoying issue has bothered many users during installation. When using a Microsoft account, Windows automatically generates the user folder based on the first five characters of your email address. The result can be a truncated or unusual folder name that appears in your file paths and in some applications.

With build 26300.8068, available in the Dev Channel of the Windows Insider Program, Microsoft is finally addressing this. A new option now allows you to choose your user folder name directly during Windows setup.

User Folders Were Automatically Generated Until Now

The user folder is the core of your Windows profile. It stores your personal folders:

  • Documents
  • Downloads
  • Pictures
  • Music
  • Videos
  • Desktop

…as well as several system folders used by applications.

Traditionally, this folder simply takes your username, for example:

C:\Users\Pascal

With Windows 11 and the requirement to use a Microsoft account, the folder name is automatically generated from the first five characters of your email.

Example:
If your email is pascal.dupont@outlook.com, Windows would create:

C:\Users\Pasca

This can be confusing, especially when using the Windows Terminal, Command Prompt, or scripts that rely on the user profile path. Changing the folder name after installation is complicated, usually requiring registry edits and profile relocation, which isn’t recommended for most users.

A New Option in the Setup Assistant

With build 26300.8068, Microsoft has added a simple but long-awaited improvement to the OOBE (Out-of-Box Experience) setup process.

On the “Name Your Device” screen, a new link appears: “Show user folder name.”

  • Clicking it opens a field where you can type your preferred folder name.
  • You can choose a clean and meaningful name, such as Pascal.

If you leave the field empty, Windows will continue to generate the folder name automatically from your email address.

Important: This option is only available during installation. Once Windows is set up, there is no graphical way to rename the user folder.

A Feature Still in Testing

For now, this feature is only available in Windows 11 build 26300.8068, distributed through the Dev Channel of Windows Insider.

  • As with most Dev Channel features, not all users will get it immediately.
  • It may take several months before this improvement reaches the stable version of Windows 11.

Conclusion

This small but long-awaited feature allows Windows 11 users to personalize their profile folder from the start, avoiding complicated post-installation workarounds. It’s a minor change that can make a big difference, especially for those using scripts, professional environments, or custom setups where consistent folder names matter.
