Some people slim down Windows to free up space or remove bloatware.
And then there are others who take it way further.
A developer known as XenoPanther has managed to create a version of Windows 7 (x86) that weighs only 69 MB. Yes, you read that right — 69 megabytes for the entire operating system.
Unlike projects such as Tiny11 or AtlasOS, which aim to provide lightweight but functional versions of Windows 11, this one is purely a technical experiment — the kind of thing you do “just to see if it works.”
It Boots, and That’s Basically It
Posted in late October on X (Twitter), XenoPanther’s challenge was simple: strip Windows 7 down to the bare minimum required to boot.
Mission accomplished — once installed, the C:\Windows folder weighs just 69 MB, compared to over 25 GB for a normal Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 setup.

The system starts, lands on the desktop… and that’s about it.
There’s no network, no drivers, no Notepad, and no Explorer extras — it’s a completely skeletal version of Windows that exists only to boot successfully.

Even Stripped Down, Windows Still Complains
Here’s the funny part: despite deleting nearly everything, one thing somehow survived —
the classic message: “This copy of Windows is not genuine.”
Even with just 69 MB left, Windows still finds a way to complain about activation.
Apparently, Microsoft’s obsession with license checks is stronger than the system itself 😅.
How to Boot It Without Errors
If you’re curious and want to try it out in a virtual machine, there’s one little trick required to avoid a startup error related to driver signature enforcement.
Here’s what to do:
- When you boot the VM, you’ll see:
“Windows failed to start. Windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file.” - Press Enter.
- Then press F8 to open the advanced boot options menu.
- Choose Disable Driver Signature Enforcement.
- Hit Enter — and it boots! 🎉

That’s it. You’ll reach the most minimal Windows desktop you’ve ever seen — no wallpaper, no icons, no start menu frills.
It’s useless in practice, but fascinating as a technical curiosity.
Quick Comparison
| Feature | Regular Windows 7 (SP1) | XenoPanther’s 69 MB Build |
|---|---|---|
Folder size (C:\Windows) | ~25 GB | 69 MB |
| Network support | ✅ Yes | ❌ No |
| Drivers | ✅ Yes | ❌ No |
| Notepad | ✅ Yes | ❌ No |
| Activation warning | ✅ Yes | ✅ Still there 😅 |
Final Thoughts
This 69 MB Windows 7 build is absolutely pointless — but that’s exactly what makes it so impressive.
It’s a brilliant display of technical minimalism and pure curiosity from a passionate tinkerer.
It doesn’t serve any real purpose… but it does boot. And honestly, that alone deserves a round of applause. 👏
