NuPhy Air75 V3: Whisper-Quiet Keys? Not Quite — But Very Close

There’s no shortage of quality keyboard manufacturers these days — more than I could ever realistically test. Many are heavily focused on gaming, but there are notable exceptions.

From time to time, I like to explore more general-purpose keyboards to see if anything truly stands out. Just before Christmas, I was tipped off about NuPhy, a popular keyboard brand that recently launched a new model tailored for the Nordic market: the Air75 V3. It’s a compact keyboard with a solid, premium feel — and a premium price to match. At around $223 at retail, expectations are understandably high.

What immediately caught my attention was the sleek design, including the option to swap one corner key for a rotary dial, and the promise of mechanical switches with full travel that are quiet enough not to disturb coworkers, sleeping children, or even the family cat.

Connect Any Way You Like

The Air75 V3 is built around a sturdy metal frame with a plastic base and fold-out rear feet offering two tilt angles. Connectivity is flexible: you can use a USB-C cable, Bluetooth, or the included 2.4 GHz wireless USB-A receiver. Like most modern keyboards, it supports quick switching between multiple devices — in this case via the Fn key combined with numbers 1 through 4.

The keyboard features high-quality mechanical switches that are fully hot-swappable, and the necessary tools are included in the box. The Nordic layout version I tested uses Blush Nano switches, which, together with a vibration-dampened chassis, significantly reduce mechanical noise. There’s still a soft thud when pressing a key, but no sharp click — and absolutely no rattling. That alone is a strong indicator of excellent build quality.

The Air75 V3 supports both Windows and macOS, with a physical switch on the back to toggle between the two. You get dedicated Opt and Cmd keys for Mac, which turn into Alt and Start Menu keys in Windows mode. That said, it’s not a perfect translation — some of the extra function row commands didn’t map correctly on my Windows system out of the box.

Detailed Web-Based Configuration

Fortunately, almost everything can be customized via NuPhyIO 2.0, available both as a web interface and a downloadable app. Here you can remap keys, record macros, assign double-tap actions, and fine-tune just about every behavior imaginable.

That said, basic navigation and typing work perfectly without touching the software — diving into the settings is entirely optional unless you enjoy customization.

Three keys come pre-installed with unmarked turquoise, yellow, and orange keycaps (replacing Esc and two keys on the opposite side). A bag of standard replacement keycaps is included, and swapping them is easy with the provided keycap puller. These special keys don’t have predefined functions — you assign them yourself. A default Delete function on one of them would have been a nice touch, but it’s not included.

The orange corner key can also be replaced with a rotary knob, which controls volume by default. Installing it is slightly more involved, requiring you to loosen a small screw — but the screwdriver is included.

A Learning Curve

If there’s one real criticism to level at the NuPhy Air75 V3, it’s the extremely compact layout — and not for any obvious functional reason. There’s no numeric keypad, which is expected at this size, but the overall spacing feels tighter than necessary.

The keys are placed slightly closer together than on a full-size keyboard, the arrow keys blend tightly into surrounding keys, and it’s easy to hit the wrong key at first. It takes some time to build muscle memory and instinctively find the right keys near the edges.

Neither I nor NuPhy explicitly call this a gaming keyboard, but there’s clearly some gaming DNA here. Per-key RGB lighting is included, with a wide range of colorful and flashy effects. Everything can be controlled directly from the keyboard using Fn key combinations, with a small quick-start guide included in the box.

Mostly for Show

That said, the backlighting is a bit odd. The light shines around the keys rather than through them, which means it doesn’t actually improve readability in a dark room. It’s purely aesthetic — and once you realize that, turning it off makes sense. Doing so also significantly improves battery life.

Even with the lighting disabled, side LEDs still indicate battery level, Caps Lock status, and individual key presses.

Thanks to a large 4,000 mAh battery, the Air75 V3 can last up to 1,200 active hours. At roughly eight hours of daily use, that’s close to six months on a single charge — provided RGB lighting is turned off. Charging is done via USB-C and takes about five hours. It’s far from fast charging, but the keyboard remains fully usable while charging.

Is It Worth the Price?

The real question is whether you’re willing to spend nearly $223 on a keyboard. For many — both dedicated gamers and users who truly appreciate a premium typing experience — the answer will be yes. The typing feel here is genuinely top-tier.

Just be prepared for a short adjustment period, and make sure you won’t miss having a numeric keypad.
